Code of Conduct & Policies

Rules are only effective when they are clearly formulated and recognised as compulsory. All our social compliance activities are based on the amfori BSCI Code of Conduct. How we define safe working conditions and how we expect them to be upheld is laid out in our code of conduct. It applies to all our product suppliers around the world.

A rulebook’s effectiveness grows with its scope. Consequently in 2018, the Otto Group’s code of conduct (which had been continually updated since its introduction in 1996) was replaced by one compiled by industry initiative amfori BSCI. It represents a global code of conduct recognised by over 2400 companies. Clear, consistent requirements help establish homogenous minimum standards in global supply chains.

The code of conduct encompasses topics such as freedom of association, collective bargaining, occupational safety, special protection for young workers, ethical business practices, anti-discrimination, reasonable working hours, and environmental conservation. It outlaws forced labour, child labour and precarious employment.

Since 2018, the code of conduct has formed part of our “Supplier Declaration on Sustainability”. The declaration outlines our sustainability demands for suppliers and must be signed by every business partner we trade with. Our suppliers and partners agree to ensure these standards are also upheld by their subcontractors. The declaration addresses key risks we have identified in supply chains, as well as our policies on working from home, subcontracting or refugee employment.
